Choose full-to-full when you hire a car in Spain: you pick it up full, return it full and pay only for the fuel you use. Prepaid or “full-to-empty” options can be convenient for short trips, but you often pay for fuel you don’t use, and some companies add a service charge.

Terms were checked on 18 October 2026.

The two main fuel policies

ECC-Net, the EU network of consumer centres, describes two main models:

  • Full-to-full: you collect the car with a full tank and return it full. If you don’t, you pay for the missing fuel and usually a refuelling fee.
  • Full-to-empty (prepaid fuel): you pay for a full tank at pick-up and can return the car at any level. Under the classic version, unused fuel is not refunded, even though you paid for a full tank.

ECC-Net also says fuel should not be prepaid unless the customer was clearly told so in the terms before booking. CEC-España, the Spanish European Consumer Centre, recommends full-to-full.

Many companies now sell variations between these two. The names differ, so read what each one actually means.

Goldcar

According to Goldcar’s terms dated 25 September 2026, its standard option is the Classic Return System: return the car with the same fuel level. Goldcar also takes a deposit equal to a full tank and refunds it. If the tank is short, you pay the missing fuel plus €50 for the refuelling service.

The “Smart Return” add-on costs €14.95 at pick-up. With it, you can return the car at any level and pay only for the fuel needed. Goldcar location pages also mention “Flex Fuel”.

Centauro

Centauro’s conditions (V06JUN/2026, clause 18) use unusual wording, so we quote it carefully. Under “Full-Empty”, you pay for the fuel or charge in the tank at pick-up, you don’t need to refuel, and unused fuel is refunded. The “Full to Full Option” is also charged at pick-up and refunded if you bring the car back full.

Either way, expect a fuel charge on your card at the desk. The Spanish consumer group OCU has criticised full-to-empty being set as the default and said Centauro’s non-refund of unused fuel was hidden in its conditions. The current conditions we read say unused fuel is refunded, so check the clause in force on your booking date.

Sixt, Europcar and Avis

According to Sixt’s Spanish conditions (version 16.10.2026), cars are delivered full and should come back full. Otherwise you pay for fuel plus a refuelling charge. “Flexi-Fuel” charges the litres you used at market price plus a service fee. “Fuel Tank” is a fixed price and lets you return the car at any level.

Europcar’s Spanish terms are dated June 2024, the oldest document here. They list a refundable full tank or full-to-full. If more than 3 litres are missing, a refuelling service charge applies.

The Avis Spain FAQ says you pay nothing if you return the car at the same level. Its prepaid full tank does not refund unused fuel. “EZ Fuel” applies automatically if you drive under 126 km and charges a fixed amount unless you show a fuel receipt. “Pay on return” charges litres plus a fixed refuelling fee.

When prepaid fuel can make sense

Pros

  • No need to find a petrol station before an early flight
  • Fixed options such as Goldcar Smart Return show the fee up front

Cons

  • You may pay for fuel you never use
  • A service charge often comes on top
  • A fuel amount is charged or blocked on your card at pick-up

Prepaid fuel suits a long road trip where you will use almost a full tank anyway. For a short trip, full-to-full is almost always cheaper.

Protect yourself at return

The Malta European Consumer Centre advises taking a photo of the fuel gauge at pick-up and at return. Keep the receipt from the last petrol station near the airport. If you are charged unfairly, complain in writing to the rental company first, then contact the European Consumer Centre in your country.

How to pick a full-to-full offer

When you compare offers on a broker, read the fuel policy of each offer before you choose, not only the price. The same car group can come with different fuel rules from different suppliers at the same airport. Compare prices for Alicante Airport on Discover Cars and pick an offer marked full-to-full. Prices change hourly, so compare live prices rather than trusting any “from” figure.

The fuel policy also affects the deposit. Goldcar, for example, adds a fuel deposit on top of the excess deposit. See our guide to the car hire deposit in Spain, our excess insurance guide and the airport guides for Málaga and Alicante. More rules are in our rules guides.
