For most trips to Spain, cheaper excess cover from a broker or a standalone insurer works, but only if you can leave a large deposit on a credit card and wait for a refund after a claim. If you want a small deposit and no paperwork, buy the rental company’s own zero-excess cover at the desk. It costs more, but it changes what happens at the counter.

Terms were checked on 18 October 2026.

What the excess is

Every rental car in Spain comes with mandatory third-party liability insurance. ECC-Net, the EU network of consumer centres, says this cover must be included in the price. What it does not cover is damage to the rental car itself. If the car is scratched, dented or stolen, you pay up to a fixed amount. That amount is the excess.

The excess can be large. According to Goldcar’s terms dated 25 September 2026, the excess without Goldcar cover is €2,300 for small and mini cars and up to €5,000 for premium cars. Centauro’s conditions (V06JUN/2026) set deposits in Spain between €1,200 and €2,200, and the deposit equals the excess.

There are three ways to cover it.

Option 1: Full coverage from a broker

Brokers such as Discover Cars and EconomyBookings sell their own cover when you book.

Discover Cars Full Coverage EconomyBookings Full Coverage
How it pays Refund: you pay the supplier, then claim Refund: claim after the rental
Claim deadline 90 days after return 30 days in the terms, 7 days in the FAQ (the two pages conflict)
Limit €5,000 (as on the voucher) €1,700
Removes the desk deposit? No No

According to Discover Cars, its Full Coverage reimburses the excess plus costs that desk cover often leaves out: windows, mirrors, tyres, wheels, towing, lost keys and misfuelling. It does not include third-party liability. Anything above the €5,000 limit is yours to pay.

EconomyBookings’ help centre lists exclusions such as third-party damage, misfuelling and drunk driving. Because its two pages give different claim deadlines, assume the shorter one and claim quickly.

Rentalcars.com also sells Full Protection, underwritten by Zurich. The pages we could read do not say whether it works as a refund. Read the policy document before you buy. We compare the two big brokers in Discover Cars vs Rentalcars.

Option 2: The rental company’s own cover

This is the cover sold at the desk or in the rental company’s booking flow. It usually costs more per day. The advantage is the deposit.

  • Goldcar: according to its terms dated 25 September 2026, the deposit drops to €300 with “Relax” and to €0 excess deposit with Super Relax or Mega Relax Plus. A fuel deposit still applies.
  • Centauro: with Smart cover there is no deposit, but the conditions say a credit-card excess deposit or a return ticket “may” still be required.
  • Europcar: according to its deposit policy, the deposit is €100 with zero-excess protection and €300 with medium protection, against €500 without.

There is no claim to file later. The rental company simply does not charge you for covered damage. Station rules vary, so check the exact terms for your pick-up desk.

Option 3: Standalone excess insurance

You buy a policy from an insurer before you travel. It works like broker cover: the rental company charges you, and you claim the money back.

iCarhireinsurance is a trading name of Cover-More Insurance Services Ltd. Its site says cover is available for residents of the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. EU residents are not mentioned, so treat it as UK-only. The policy covers bodywork, tyres, roof, windscreen and undercarriage, plus towing and misfuelling, for up to 9 additional drivers. The site gives two different limits, £7,500 and £6,000, so check the policy wording. See iCarhireinsurance policies if you live in the UK.

RentalCover.com sells to residents of the EEA (insurer Cover Genius Europe B.V.) and the UK (Cover Genius Ltd). Its claim page says the rental company charges your card and RentalCover refunds you if the claim is approved. There is no fixed claim deadline unless your policy says otherwise. Check RentalCover for your trip.

Which option fits you

Pros

  • Broker or standalone cover usually costs less than desk cover
  • Often covers tyres, glass, keys and towing
  • One policy can be bought before you fly

Cons

  • The full deposit stays on your credit card
  • You pay first and claim back later
  • The desk may still try to sell you its own cover

Choose broker or standalone cover if you have a credit card with a high limit and you are fine with paperwork after a claim. Choose desk cover if you only have a debit card, have a low card limit, or simply want to walk away from the car without a dispute. Our guide to the car hire deposit in Spain shows the amounts each company blocks.

Who your contract is with

CEC-España, the Spanish European Consumer Centre, reminds travellers that the rental contract is normally with the rental company, not the broker. Desk staff are not bound by your broker policy. Saying “no thanks” to extra cover is enough. Check the deposit amount before you sign.

How to make a claim work

  1. Take photos and a video of the car at pick-up and return, including the fuel gauge.
  2. Keep the rental agreement, the damage report and the final invoice.
  3. Make sure the charge is itemised. A refund-based policy needs proof of what you paid.
  4. Claim within the deadline: 90 days for Discover Cars, and as soon as possible for EconomyBookings.

If the rental company charges something you dispute, write to it first. If that fails, the European Consumer Centre in your country can help for free.

Picking up in the south? Read our Málaga Airport car hire guide or the Alicante Airport guide. When you book, compare prices for Málaga Airport on Discover Cars and look at the deposit and excess shown for each offer before you choose. Frequently asked questions

Do I need excess insurance to hire a car in Spain?

No. Third-party liability insurance is mandatory and included in the rental price, according to ECC-Net. Excess insurance is optional. It covers the amount you pay if the car is damaged or stolen, which can be several thousand euros.

Does broker full coverage remove the deposit at the desk?

No. Discover Cars and EconomyBookings both say their Full Coverage does not remove or reduce the rental company's deposit. You still need a credit card in the main driver's name with enough limit.

Is excess insurance from a broker paid out straight away?

No. Discover Cars and RentalCover both work on refunds. The rental company charges your card first, and you claim the money back after the rental with the paperwork.

Can EU residents buy iCarhireinsurance?

The iCarhireinsurance website says cover is available for residents of the UK, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. EU residents are not mentioned, so treat it as UK-only. RentalCover sells to both EEA and UK residents.

When is the rental company's own cover the better choice?

When you want a low or zero deposit, or you do not want to wait for a refund. For example, Goldcar's terms dated 25 September 2026 set a €0 excess deposit with Super Relax, and Europcar's deposit drops to €100 with its zero-excess protection.
