For car hire at Malaga Airport, compare prices on a broker first, then check three things in the supplier’s terms: where the desk is, how big the deposit is and which fuel policy applies. Goldcar, Sixt, Europcar, Avis and OK Mobility have desks in the terminal. Centauro is off-airport and uses a shuttle. Deposits range from a few hundred euros to over €2,000, depending on the company and the car group.

Terms were checked on 18 October 2026.

Malaga-Costa del Sol is the fourth-busiest airport in Spain. According to Aena, it handled 26,760,549 passengers in 2025, 7.4% more than a year earlier. Demand for rental cars is high in summer and around Easter, so book early.

Prices change every hour, so we don’t quote daily rates here. To see live offers from several suppliers side by side, compare prices for Malaga Airport on Discover Cars.

Where the car hire desks are

Rental companies at Malaga use two models. Some have a desk in the terminal and cars in the airport car park. Others are a short bus ride away. Here is what each company says on its own Malaga page.

Company Desk location (company’s own page)
Goldcar Inside the terminal, near arrivals, no shuttle
Sixt Terminals 2 and 3 arrivals, Car Rental Hall, level -1
Europcar Arrivals hall, Terminals 2 and 3
Avis Arrivals hall, ground floor of T2/T3, one level below baggage claim
OK Mobility In the terminal, floor -1 car rental area
Centauro Off-airport (C/ de Pascal 42, Pol. Ind. Villa Rosa), shuttle every 10–15 minutes

Centauro says you walk about 100 m towards the Renfe Aeropuerto train station to find its yellow shuttle. An off-airport desk adds time on arrival and on return. Plan for it if you have an early flight home.

Deposits: the number that matters most

The deposit is the amount the company blocks on your card at the desk. It is returned after you bring the car back, if nothing is wrong. It is separate from the rental price. These are the published figures for direct bookings in Spain:

Company Deposit (official terms)
Goldcar €950 (Small–Mini) to €2,000 (Full size, Premium) without Goldcar cover; €300 with “Relax”; €0 excess deposit with Super Relax or Mega Relax Plus, but a fuel deposit still applies
Centauro Equals the excess: €1,200 to €2,200 depending on the car group, without Smart cover
Sixt €300 for most groups, €500 or €750 for larger cars, €2,000 for sports and luxury
Avis Rental price + €200, minus anything you prepaid

Broker insurance does not remove the deposit. Discover Cars says its Full Coverage does not reduce the supplier’s deposit, so you still need a credit card with enough limit. Read more in our guides to car hire deposits in Spain and excess insurance.

Credit or debit card?

Most suppliers want a credit card in the main driver’s name. Sixt’s Spanish terms accept Visa and Mastercard debit cards, but the deposit is charged, not blocked. Goldcar’s terms accept debit cards, while its Malaga page says they are not accepted. Ask before you travel if you only have a debit card.

Fuel policy at Malaga

The fuel policy can change the final cost more than the daily rate. The common options are:

  • Full to full. You pick the car up full and return it full. You pay only for fuel you use.
  • Full to empty. You pay for a full tank at the desk. Refunds for unused fuel depend on the company.

According to Goldcar’s terms, its standard option is a return with the same fuel level. If the tank is short, you pay the missing fuel plus a €50 refuelling service. Goldcar also sells “Smart Return” for €14.95 at pick-up, which lets you return the car at any level and pay only for the fuel needed. Centauro’s default is “Full-Empty”: you pay for the fuel at pick-up and unused fuel is refunded, according to its conditions.

The European Consumer Centres Network (ECC-Net) says fuel should not be prepaid unless the terms made this clear before booking. See our fuel policy guide for the details.

A broker shows many suppliers at once and lets you filter by desk location and fuel policy. A direct booking can be simpler if you already know the company. We explain the two big brokers in Discover Cars vs Rentalcars.

Before you sign at the desk

  • Check the deposit amount on the contract before you sign.
  • Photograph the car, the fuel gauge and the mileage at pick-up and at return.
  • Keep the fuel receipt from a station near the airport.
  • Refuse extras you did not ask for. You can say no at the desk.

If something goes wrong, CEC-España, the Spanish European Consumer Centre, notes that your contract is normally with the rental company, not the broker. You can also ask your bank to refund an improper charge.
